PART-TIME (20 HR/WK) LIBRARY/CIRCULATION ASSISTANT – RIDGEWAY LIBRARY
POSITION SUMMARY
Under the supervision of the Branch Librarian, the Library/Circulation Assistant serves patrons at the Circulation desk and provides support for library programming and other activities. Schedule may include Saturday and evening hours.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
Assists with planning and conducting programming for library patrons of all ages.
Assists with summer reading program and other special programs.
Provides written statistical information to supervisor.
Attends conferences and workshops as appropriate.
Performs circulation duties and answers reference questions.
Plans and creates displays to encourage reading.
Provides reader advisory services.
Organizes and shelves library materials.
Performs other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Dependability and the ability to work well without supervision.
Ability to create and implement creative programming.
Ability to learn standard library tasks readily and adhere to prescribed routines.
Ability to work well under pressure.
Ability to maintain a good working relationship with public/staff.
Computer literacy or willingness and ability to complete computer training satisfactorily.
Strong oral communication skills, including patience, tact, and a good sense of humor.
Knowledge of basic library policies and procedures.
Knowledge of the local community.
Knowledge of general reader interests, especially popular books and authors.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
High School Diploma or equivalent.
Experience working with the public or some college experience.

Martinsville - Full-time Circ Assistant
FULL-TIME, MARTINSVILLE BRANCH, CIRCULATION ASSISTANT
POSITION SUMMARY
Under the supervision of the Branch Librarian or Circulation Supervisor, the Circulation Assistant performs varied clerical and technical tasks in providing service to patrons at the circulation desk.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
Checks library materials in and out according to established rules and procedures Answers patrons' directional and procedural inquiries
Prepares and issues new or replacement library cards
Answers telephone and refers calls to appropriate person or department Collects fines and other library fees
Assists patrons in selection and location of books, videos, periodicals, and other library materials Processes requests for reserved materials
Maintains periodical collection (except at headquarters library) Organizes returned library items on book trucks for shelving Responsible for opening and closing procedures of the library as needed Supervises page in the absence of the supervisor
Shelves library materials in the absence of a page Prepares notices for mailing
Assists with window displays, arts, and crafts as needed Works in other branches as needed
Attends conferences and workshops as appropriate Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor
Assist with library programming

General knowledge of reader interests, books, and authors Self-starter who can work without supervision
