Martinsville Reference Supervisor



Under the supervision of the Director and/or Branch Manager, the Reference Supervisor develops, provides, and promotes reference service for the library system. The Reference Supervisor supervises Reference Assistants. This is an exempt position under the Fair Labor Standards Act.



Provides reference assistance to patrons of all ages

Serves as resource contact for branch libraries

Assists in selecting, updating, and weeding the reference and non-fiction collections

Provides instruction in use of on-line catalog, Internet, microform readers, copiers, etc.

Provides instruction in use of cell phones, tablets, and laptops

Teaches computer classes:   Social Media—Facebook, Email, Instagram, etc.

       Microsoft Office—Word, Excel, Publisher, etc.

Performs automated system procedures on a rotational basis

Maintains Martinsville periodical collection and provides support for branch collections

Coordinates seasonal collection of IRS forms

Produces or supervises production of reports, guides, signs, etc., which assist staff and patrons

Assists with upkeep and evaluation of adult services equipment

Provides tours and school visits as necessary

Maintains microform collections

Provides interlibrary loan service for Martinsville branch and other buildings as needed

Procures non-accessioned non-fiction items for the system

Assesses the community's information needs

Assures reference desk coverage during hours the library is open to the public

Assists with opening and closing routines

Assists at the circulation desk when needed

Works in other libraries in the system as needed

Attends conferences and workshops as appropriate

Assists with festivals the library participates in

Keeps abreast of current events

Performs other duties as assigned



Knowledge of digital and print reference sources and other materials in the major disciplines, including social sciences, business, natural sciences, technology, and humanities

Knowledge of and ability to implement Blue Ridge Regional Library policies and procedures

Ability to maintain good working relationships with public/staff

Good organizational, planning, and supervisory skills

Interest in, enthusiasm for, and experience with electronic information resources

Written and oral communication skills

Good judgment and sound decision-making skills

Patience, tact, and a good sense of humor

Self-starter who can work without supervision



Master of Library Science/Library and Information Science from ALA-accredited school

Eligibility for certification by Library of Virginia

One year of reference experience
